Description
The branch of Materials often referred to as Materials Science or Materials Engineering represents a multidisciplinary concept related to natural sciences, biomedicine, and informatics on one side and technological disciplines on the other side. Know-how in the branch is formed not only by metallurgical, mechanical, electrical, civil, and wood engineers, but also by physicists, astrophysicists, chemists, as well as experts in informatics and some other disciplines. Worldwide, this branch is extended mainly in technologically developed countries. From methodology point of view, it covers research activities based on physical and chemical principles and calculations, advanced experimental procedures, the sophisticated description of technological procedures, and the treatment of obtained findings by an innovative way suitable for transferring into the production sphere. Thematically, the branch is oriented toward the development of advanced material systems for space and defence applications, state of the art medical implants and diagnostic equipment, microchips, nanosensors, superconductors, and other construction and/or functional systems. Material concepts for production and storage of energy from renewable resources, inclusive of fusion reactors, belong also to crucial topics of the branch. With respect to the needs of the Košice-region, Slovakia, and the European economic and research area, new associated and regular professors are coached for their missions. Both types of professors are expected to be knowledgeable in the theoretic disciplines, computer added activities (including numerical simulation and process control), and in the use of experimental and testing techniques, including the non-destructive testing. They should be percipient to innovations and transfer of knowledge to praxis. They should be familiar with construction and functional materials varying in chemical and structural nature, including nanomaterials, advanced hybrid materials with balanced strength and plasticity, thin layers, and corrosion-resistive materials. They take control of technological processes initiated with heat and/or deformation occurring with forming, heat treatment and welding of materials. They also use their expert knowledge about materials of mass production/usage, being important from economic and social viewpoints. One of the important tasks of the branch, related to the personal background of the university, is the creation/keeping the experts applicable in the up-to-date education procedures. Future professors are therefore confronted with high demands concerning their scientific profile, followed by the pedagogical eligibility and organizational capability. Within the educational process, the professors have to motivate students through their professional knowledge, general perspective, and personal example. Thanks to quality professors, the students of Materials Science in all three degrees of the university education can adopt easier the innovative approaches to mastering both service-related problems and research tasks.
