Description
The study program Waste processing and recycling as a technology field that belongs to the study branch of Extraction and Processing of Earth Resources, which is based on the natural science foundations of mathematics, physics and chemistry. Its mission is to educate creative and technical experts with wide theoretical, practical and experimental skills and competences in the field of processing and recycling of secondary raw materials and waste, environmental technologies, technological production processes and process engineering in all branches of industry, research as well as in the field of state administration and public administration. The content of the study program covers knowledge in the areas of advanced analytical techniques and methods of characterization of raw materials, waste and materials, waste management legislation and remediation of environmental components, assessment of environmental aspects and impacts of industrial metal production and raw materials, specific processing techniques of secondary raw materials, principles of recycling processes and methods of obtaining metals and chemical substances and compounds from waste and secondary raw materials using modern techniques, computing tools and applied software in the harmony of circular economy and ethics principal.
Learning objectives
The graduate will demonstrate deep and cross-sectional professional knowledge from natural science subjects and related technologically oriented profiling subjects with an orientation to the processes and methods of identification, analysis, treatment, processing of raw materials and recycling of municipal, industrial and hazardous waste and environmental aspects of industrial production. He has knowledge about the chemical and physical properties of raw materials and waste and understands the theoretical essence and practical aspects of the technological processes of raw materials and waste processing, especially in metallurgical and related areas of industrial and creative activity. He understands the principles and functions of equipment for the treatment, sorting, recycling of raw materials and waste of all types and states of matter and the acquisition and refining of metals and compounds and he knows how to apply them in a creative way in the processing of raw materials and waste. He is able to determine, predict and evaluate the effects of physico-chemical parameters and variables on the process by integrating theoretical assumptions, thermodynamic calculations, kinetic and experimental data. He knows how to statistically evaluate the obtained results and knows how to work with technical standards.He knows the principles of material balance processes. He has theoretical and practical skills in the construction of diagrams using thermodynamic software, in methodics of experimentation and in the assembly of basic laboratory equipment for research on the processing of raw materials and waste. He is able to creatively propose solutions for the processing of raw materials and waste based on theoretical knowledge, experimental results and process analysis and integrate them into a comprehensive study. He understands the interrelationships between environmental components and technological processes and can synthesize and draw conclusions from theoretical and experimental observations. He knows how to identify, monitor and evaluate the effects of processes on the environment and human health and creatively propose appropriate measures for remediation and elimination of negative effects while maintaining ethical and social principles. He resolve and implements theoretical knowledge in solving and improving existing processes in the processing of raw materials and waste containing toxic and hazardous substances and components. He is able to effectively search, use, analyze, evaluate, integrate and compare the scientific information, work with information systems and databases and valid Slovak and European legislation in waste management. The graduate has the competence to work and coordinate work in teams and to clearly and comprehensibly communicate, formulate, present, justify and defend the conclusions of the proposed technological solutions with the professional and lay public. The graduate has a developed educational and self-education skills and is ready to continue studing in the study program of 3th degree.
Main learning outcomes
Graduate of the study program: - Demonstrates deep and cross-sectional professional theoretical and practical knowledge of the main topics of the study program, which are processing technologies of primary and secondary raw materials and, municipal, industrial and hazardous waste, environmental aspects of metal production and processing and recovery and extraction of raw materials and elimination of pollution of environmental components. It is profiled mainly in the preparation and sophisticated sorting procedures of raw materials, recycling technologies, identification of raw materials and chemical substances and chemical analysis and analytical techniques, processing of raw materials and waste by physical (mechanical), hydrometallurgical, electrochemical and pyrometallurgical processes, in the processes of obtaining raw materials and materials, refining of non-ferrous metals and compounds obtained from waste and also in wastewater treatment and remediation processes. - Can apply basic theoretical, practical and factual knowledge about processing technologies, recycling processes and environmental aspects and integrate known procedures and legislative measures when solving new tasks. - Understands and knows how to use modern identification analytical methods, software tools, implement and evaluate material balances of processes and predict the behavior of systems using thermodynamic calculations and the construction of phase and speciation diagrams when solving scientific and technological tasks. - Is able to effectively search, analyze, evaluate and critically select professional information, integrate, compare and synthesize theoretical and practical knowledge in the broader context of processing of raw materials and waste. - Knows the environmental aspects of the production and processing of raw materials and metals and is able to evaluate the environmental impacts of technologies on the environment based on selected criteria. - Has the ability to creatively solve assigned tasks in the field of study and study program and can design or improve existing processes. - Has experimental skills to verify the feasibility and suitability of waste recycling methods for waste streams of various types and states, as well as methods to eliminate pollution, while maintaining ethical and social principles of responsibility. - Knows the legislative framework, strategic goals of the EU in waste management and has the skills to implement valid legislation and waste management information systems when solving tasks and projects. - Can manage information management, has critical conceptual thinking, can identify and solve professional problems in the given field. - Has the capability to work and coordinate work in teams and to make independent and responsible decisions with regard to ethical and social criteria. - Has the capability to clearly and comprehensibly formulate, present and communicate conclusions, findings and justifications in front of experts and the lay public in the field of characterization, treatment, processing and recycling of raw materials and waste from industries and consumption and the influence of environmental pollution for the society and environment and its subsequent minimizing or elimination.

Evaluation of the study programme quality by employers
The results of a questionnaire survey of employers (8 companies participated) who took part in the evaluation survey of the study program "Waste processing and recycling" show that: • 87.5% of employers evaluate the focus of the study program "Waste processing and recycling" as satisfactory or rather satisfactory for practice, • 100% of employers perceive the content and content of the study program as satisfactory or rather satisfactory for practice, • 100% of employers consider the study program important for practice, • 100% of employers, based on their own experience, expressed the claim that graduates of the study program have a practical application and are a perspective for the company, • 75% of employers unequivocally state that graduates of the study program can also find employment in other industries related to the recycling industry. The remaining 25% of employers confirm rather than deny this statement. The results of a questionnaire survey of employers who took part in the evaluation survey of graduates of the "waste processing and recycling" study program who work in the companies in question show that: • 100% of employers assess the graduates of this study program as a significant asset or asset to their company, • 50% of employers rate the professional preparation of graduates of the study program for the performance of activities in their company as excellent, 37.5% of employers rate the working graduates as prepared and 12.5% ​​as averagely prepared for the performance of activities, • 75% of employers evaluate the practical skills of graduates of the study program as skills that have a basis in high-quality practical training, 12.5% ​​of employers evaluate them as skills with minor deficiencies that will improve after training, and 12.5% ​​as average practical skills. • 50% of employers rate graduates of the study program very positively from the point of view of creativity for their company, and 50% rate them positively from this point of view. According to the additional statements of the voting employers, the responses to the graduates of the "Waste Processing and Recycling" study program are positive and positive, especially for their very good professional preparation, independence in solving assigned tasks and, after work, competence in handling the assigned segment. At the same time, the exceptionality of the "Waste processing and recycling" study program is highlighted by employers, which is primarily related to the insufficient number of educational institutions with a given or related focus.

Access to study literature is through the University Library and its study room, either in physical or electronic form via the website http://www.lib.tuke.sk/. At the same time, from the university environment, students have free access to world databases such as Web of Science, Scopus and Science Direct, where scientific articles and publications can be found. E-learning
The method used is using the Moodle TUKE platform, which offers a wide range of uses such as e.g. storing lectures and other teaching materials, informing students and implementing papers and tests. Other platforms are licensed programs of the Technical University in Košice, namely: Webex and Microsoft Teams.
