Graduate profile
DescriptionThe Power Machines and Equipment study program is aimed at acquiring knowledge in the field of designs, calculations, construction and production of energy machines and devices. The core of the study program is based on theoretical and methodological professional knowledge from the scientific disciplines of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and heat transfer, which, together with knowledge from classical and alternative energy, form the professional profile of the graduate. The level of knowledge of the graduate is enriched by the experience gained during practical exercises and the knowledge gained from numerical calculations supported by computer modeling (Ansys CFX, CAD systems), which are necessary to solve a wide range of problems related to the design, construction and operation of machines and equipment that produce, produce and transform energy in the form intended for consumption (boilers and various combustion devices, pumps and compressors, cogeneration units, turbines, combustion engines, etc.). The concept of the study program takes into account the current direction of the Slovak energy industry and brings the possibility of the graduate's involvement in the department's research activities.
Learning objectives
Graduates possess extensive technical and methodological knowledge of the studied field, in particular of its key disciplines, such as thermomechanics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, designing, and manufacturing and processing technologies. They possess the knowledge of designing, manufacture and operation of power systems, as well as of the methods how to increase their efficiency and reduce energy consumption. They master the basic theoretical knowledge of the processes involved in process technology, understand the theoretical connections among the processes running within processing and manufacturing, as well as the storage and recovery of various forms of energy. Depending on the students’ preferences in this field of study, they can acquire knowledge and skills while using laboratory equipment and technology; they are capable of recording, analysing and evaluating the measured data, and are able to make conclusions based on the acquired knowledge. The Master degree in the Power Machines and Equipment study program is awarded to the students who: • demonstrate practical and methodological knowledge of the key disciplines within the given field of study; they will apply the gained knowledge in their carrier or research activities; • demonstrate the ability to modify the general and technical knowledge when solving particular issues; • are able to creatively apply relevant methods, tools, instruments and materials; • demonstrate their ability to implement solutions to methodical, technical or practical issues; • are capable of finding optimal solutions by applying relevant methods, techniques and a systemic approach when solving issues.
Main learning outcomes
Graduates of the master studies in the Mechanical Engineering field of study, the Power Machines and Equipment study programme, exhibit high-level autonomy of work in changing environments and are capable of working efficiently as individuals, team members or team leaders. In their work, they respect the ethical principles. They are capable of innovative thinking and are ready to professionally present the outputs of their creative work to the community of experts in their native or a foreign language. They are able to autonomously develop, process and practically apply engineering approaches when solving technical issues. They master designing, constructing and analysing complex technical solutions in the field of mechanical engineering and power engineering. Graduates of the Power Machines and Equipment study program will: • be able to use modern software appliances (ANSYS, MATLAB, PTC Creo etc.) when solving construction and engineering tasks; • understand the interconnections between energy production, distribution, accumulation and utilisation; • be able to analyse the advantages and disadvantages of using fossil, renewable and alternative energy sources while accepting the ecology aspects; • be able to analyse and create technical designs and perfrom research tasks with high-level creativity and autonomy; • understand the obstacles associated with producing energy from various sources; already during their studies, they will be capable of bringing new ideas for the real-life industrial operations; • gain experience of formulating hypotheses, creating experimental designs, verifying hypotheses and analysing the obtained data; they will be capable of autonomous assessment of the positives and negatives of their own designs; • will be sufficiently prepared for doctoral studies (Cycle 3) and for building their scientific prospects in the process in acquiring new knowledge of power engineering while applying the latest methods and available techniques. Furthermore, they will be able to find employment immediately after the completion of their master studies. • be employable in any undertaking operating in the field of mechanical and power engineering, in any field of the national economy where power machines and equipment are used; • having gained experience in managing, possess the qualification necessary for becoming a coordinator of teams of developers, primarily in power engineering undertakings.

Characteristics of the information provision
Study literature and information databases are available in the TUKE University Library: http://www.lib.tuke.sk/Library/Home/DigitalLibrary The TUKE University Library stock consists of the titles published by the University (books, university textbooks, yearbooks, journals, diploma theses and electronic media). In 2022, there were 172,878 items available in the Library. An annual increase in the Library stock represents more than 3,000 items. The basic and additional study literature, journals, yearbooks, encyclopaedias, dictionaries and other reference books are available in the study room, freely accessible to users. Within the library services, users borrow approximately 5,000 books every year. University Library provides barrier-free access to 2 lifts and 2 restrooms for the disabled. There are 650 study seats and more than 300 seats with a power socket for charging laptops and mobile phones. The Library also offers a possibility to use 32 desktop computers connected to the internet, intranet, with a Wi-Fi network and access to databases of electronic periodicals. In the Library’s Copy Centre, students may use printing and reprography services, which are provided using 12 printers, including 3 large-size printers. The Library also includes a digitalisation centre equipped with a scanning robot and a book scanner available to the public, located in the study room.
