Graduate profile

Description
The study program Environmental Protection and Ecotechnologies of Raw Materials provides graduates with a broader professional profile, offering comprehensive, high-quality knowledge in technical and natural science disciplines, as well as the application of environmental, economic, and social insights. The graduate possesses knowledge of mineral raw materials and their utilization, material chemistry, and understands the physical and chemical nature of processes used within their specialization, along with their impact on technological complexity and demands. The graduate understands the processing and beneficiation of mineral raw materials for further use across various sectors of the economy, enabling them to design, model, and plan technologies for processing primary and secondary raw materials. Graduates are qualified for roles in organizations focused on monitoring and evaluating environmental conditions, waste management, and environmental impact assessment. They also find opportunities in fields related to the recycling of industrial and municipal waste components and the separation of fine-dispersed particles captured by air and water protection ecotechnologies. Career opportunities exist in both the public and private sectors—including public administration, local government environmental offices, industrial enterprises dealing with raw material processing, and various environmental organizations.
Learning objectives
A graduate of the Master's degree study program Environmental Protection and Ecotechnologies of Raw Materials builds upon their natural science, technical, and humanities education acquired in a related bachelor's degree program. The graduate is particularly knowledgeable in the processing and beneficiation of mineral (coal, metallic, and non-metallic) raw materials for their further utilization in various sectors of the economy, enabling them to design, optimize, construct, and manage processing technologies. At the same time, they can apply their knowledge in environmental technologies (recycling and processing of industrial and municipal waste, drinking water treatment and wastewater treatment, dedusting and cleaning of industrial gases) that utilize processing technologies or their components. Through this, the graduate gains an original, unified, and comprehensive view of the challenges and perspectives of physical, physicochemical, chemical, and biological processes used in the processing and recycling of primary and secondary raw materials. FBERG TUKE respects student diversity by allowing students to choose topics for semester assignments and projects, as well as the topic of their final thesis, offering elective courses, enabling the selection of internship placement, and encouraging the creation of research teams for project work, where students themselves define their roles within the team. FBERG TUKE creates a closer link between the study program and labor market demands by defining learning outcomes, thereby allowing students to make informed choices. Elective courses are equivalent subjects that shape the specific knowledge and competencies of the master's program graduate in Environmental Protection and Ecotechnologies of Raw Materials. Graduates can utilize the detailed knowledge they acquire regarding surface and interfacial phenomena in the processing and recycling of ultra-fine-grained materials with a high specific surface area (sludges, dusts, sediments, fly ash, etc.). The knowledge gained in raw material processing technologies can be implemented across the entire processing chain—not only at the beginning but also at the end—thus enabling maximum (re)valorization within the context of modern environmental protection principles. The graduate is prepared to participate in the development and application of non-traditional processing and environmental technologies, such as mineral biotechnologies, nanotechnologies, and similar fields.
Main learning outcomes
A graduate of the Master's degree study program Environmental Protection and Ecotechnologies of Raw Materials is able to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding in the study program Environmental Protection and Ecotechnologies of Raw Materials, building upon their general secondary education and Bachelor's degree education, typically at the level of advanced textbooks supplemented by selected aspects of the latest findings in the field of extraction and processing of Earth resources. 2. Apply their insights and knowledge from technical and natural science disciplines, as well as the application of environmental, economic, legislative, and social aspects in planning and decision-making, in managing environmental processes with regard to environmental components, and in the treatment and processing of primary and secondary raw materials, demonstrating a professional approach to their work and profession. Possess competencies typically demonstrated through constructing and defending arguments and solving specific problems and tasks within the field of study. 3. Gather and interpret relevant data and facts within the field of study and make ethically and socially responsible decisions based on them. 4. Communicate and present information, concepts, principles, problems, and solutions to both specialist and lay audiences. 5. Possess the learning skills necessary to continue further studies with a high degree of autonomy.

Evaluation of the study programme quality by employers
The study program at FBERG TUKE is fully aligned with the needs of real-world practice. Since communication between education at FBERG TUKE and employers is continuous, it consists of solving joint projects with the involvement of students and carrying out commercial research tasks. By engaging company professionals in the graduation process through membership in state examination boards at the respective university degree level, the faculty reflects employer requirements for graduates of the study program and critically compares them with international trends. Employer representatives issue a statement of approval regarding the compliance of the qualifications acquired by graduates of the Faculty of Mining, Ecology, Process Control and Geotechnologies of the Technical University of Košice (FBERG TUKE) with sector-specific requirements for practicing the profession: Ing. Igor Šimko, PhD., MBA, as an industry expert who also serves as a court expert in the field of environmental protection for the industrial and municipal waste sector and for environmental damage assessment. Ing. Ladislav Pašek, PhD., from the state enterprise DIAMO, who serves as Deputy Director for Raw Materials and Distribution, DIAMO.
