DescriptionThe Metallurgy PhD. study program provides in-depth knowledge in the field of iron and steel metallurgy, non-ferrous metallurgy and recycling, foundry, and thermal technology. It gives the ability to solve projects of production and processing of materials, their research and development in order to create and develop new knowledge in the field of metallurgy and mechanical engineering. It provides methodological knowledge and skills for very effective and appropriate scientific methods of solving one's own dissertation and other topics of basic applied material research. The study program teaches to follow the latest trends in science and research and provides them for the solution of assigned scientific and technical tasks and the formulation of new hypotheses and strategies for further research in the material field. It provides knowledge in the field of measurement, collection and processing of data using modern information resources and analytical techniques. It gives skills and competences to present the results of research and development at conferences and in scientific periodicals. to gain basic theoretical and practical pedagogical experience for professional education. The graduate has deep knowledge and understands theories and concepts in the field of metal production, casting, foundry, chemistry, physical metallurgy, high-temperature processes, thermal engineering and metallurgical energy; has an overview of the current technical news of the research and development design department, or development of the field of professional practice, mastering the methods and means of process management and simulation in detail; stationary and dynamic analysis of studied processes, assessment of thermal stress, flow, dynamics of hydromechanical and thermodynamic systems, heat and mass transfer, as well as interaction of transfer phenomena with chemical reactions. He has a detailed command of the mathematical apparatus and principles necessary for the design and execution of numerical and physical simulations of metallurgical processes.
Learning objectives
A graduate of the 3rd degree of the study program Metallurgy has deep knowledge and understands theories and concepts in the field of: metal production, casting, foundry, production and application of non-metallic materials, chemistry, physical metallurgy, high-temperature processes, thermal technology and metallurgical energy; has an overview of the current technology news of the research and development design department, or development of the field of professional practice, mastering the methods and means of process management and simulation in detail; stationary and dynamic analysis of studied processes, assessment of thermal stress, flow, dynamics of hydromechanical and thermodynamic systems, heat and mass transfer, as well as interactions of transfer phenomena with chemical reactions. He has a detailed survey of the mathematical apparatus and principles necessary for the design and execution of numerical and physical simulations of metallurgical processes. He controls the means of mathematical modelling and the logical principles of processes at a high level. The graduate is a top expert capable of independently solving science and research problems or other very demanding practical tasks; establishes scientific hypotheses or assumptions for solving problems aimed at the development of the field and practice, proposes scientific procedures for verifying hypotheses, is able to present and defend his solutions in the professional community, lead a discussion about it in a foreign language, knows how to write and publish scientific work and publish his own original results in peer-reviewed journal at the national or international level, is able to creatively and fundamentally contribute to new solutions, possesses a high ability of self-education to achieve high flexibility in the labor market, has good organizational skills and is characterized by a well-developed ability to receive new information and solve new technical problems; is able to practically use, develop and elaborate computer approaches in solving professional problems; knows how to use both basic and specific experimental methodologies and independently implement even challenging experiments in the laboratory, can process and evaluate the results of the experiment at a high professional level; is able to conduct independent, original and peer-reviewed periodical publishable research that exceeds the current boundaries of knowledge in the field at an international level. Analyzes the results and presents proposals for solutions, optimization, and intensification of processes. Solves thermotechnical processes using mathematical modelling tools. Analyzes the energy requirements of processes and present solutions. A graduate can compile and submit the projects.
Main learning outcomes
A graduate of the 3rd degree of the study program Metallurgy can autonomously plan and implement research and development in the context of the company requirements, can communicate about the subject of his expert interest and the results achieved with experts from his field and with experts from other fields, possibly also with laymen, can present the results independently of research and development in the professional community in Slovakia and abroad, has the ability to critically evaluate the limiting conditions for analyzes in the context of the field of study, both from a local and societal point of view. He knows how to create original knowledge in order to significantly contribute to the development of the field or area of professional practice, he has a detailed overview and extensive knowledge of the state of knowledge in his field of specialization and understands the consequences of the studied phenomena and processes and their mutual interactions, he is capable of critical thinking when formulating new, complex problems, he is ready to apply himself on the Slovak and international market as a top manager in the field of research, development and transfer of innovations, in the field of management and quality control, as well as in the business sphere when establishing his own companies, at universities and in the state sector. He is able to convey the acquired knowledge in an appropriate way also within the educational process in professional subjects from metallurgy, foundry, metallic and non-metallic materials. He achieves a high level of understanding of the project being solved. Motivates people, ensures organization and is responsible for the results of the tasks solved. He is responsible for the expertise of the work performed and evaluates the performed operations and execution. It creates new procedures and ways of solving metallurgical, foundry and energy processes.

The study program Metallurgy at FMMR TUKE is fully implemented with the needs of real practice. Since communication between education at FMMR TUKE and employers is continuous, it consists in solving joint projects with the involvement of doctoral students, solving research tasks of a commercial nature, using professionals from companies as opponents of dissertations, in commissions for dissertation examinations and consultants in solving dissertations, reflecting requirements of employers of doctoral graduates and critically evaluates them with trends abroad.
