Description
Graduates of doctoral studies have the prerequisites to assess and solve complex theoretical and practical problems at individual management levels of the public sector and are able to creatively apply new knowledge in pedagogical, economic and social practice. He is professionally prepared to propose, manage and participate in the solution of demanding research projects, as well as in the creation of strategic documents aimed at the socio-economic development of all territorial levels. He can publish research results in scientific and professional publications and participate in the training of new experts. The study program builds on the knowledge, skills and skills acquired in the engineering degree by expanding the theoretical base and deepening practical skills. A graduate of the 3rd degree of the Spatial and Regional Economics program in the field of Public Administration and Regional Development is a highly qualified expert for individual levels and management levels of public administration and for research in the field of public economy, public administration, regional development and regional policy, who has broad knowledge from the field of scientific methods, economic sciences and especially from public economics, public administration and regional science. He has the prerequisites to assess and solve complex theoretical and practical problems at individual management levels of the public sector and is able to creatively apply new knowledge in pedagogical, economic and social practice. He is professionally prepared to participate in the creation of strategic documents aimed at the socio-economic development of the region as well as in the solution of demanding research projects. He can publish research results in scientific and professional publications and participate in the training of new experts.
Learning objectives
The aim of the PhD study programme Spatial and Regional Economics in the field of Economics and Management is to prepare highly qualified experts for research in the field of public economics, public administration, regional development and regional policy. They can thus find employment in academic departments as well as in institutions focusing on basic or applied research. Graduates of the study programme will also be prepared for the various levels and levels of government, especially those for which it is necessary to be able to assess the analytical quality of the materials used as a basis for public policy-making. Graduates have the prerequisites to assess and solve complex theoretical and practical problems at individual management levels of the public sector and are able to creatively apply new knowledge in pedagogical, economic and social practice. He/she is professionally prepared to design, manage and participate in the solution of demanding research projects, as well as in the creation of strategic documents aimed at socio-economic development of all territorial levels. He/she can publish research results in scientific and professional publications and participate in the training of new professionals. A strong emphasis is placed on mastering methods and techniques of national and regional economic analysis, programme and project development, key methods of regional and spatial analysis and more complex research and statistical methods. Graduates are prepared to know and use appropriate methods and analytical tools upon entry into employment. The study programme is based on an individual approach to the doctoral student and on the principle of doctoral student autonomy. The doctoral student chooses the composition of elective courses as well as the progress of work on the dissertation (in accordance with the regulations of the University). The doctoral student is encouraged to discuss his/her own research with all faculty members in order to gain as broad a perspective as possible. The educational program is designed with the goal of: • to become familiar with the existing research related to the dissertation topic - both theoretical and empirical literature; • to acquire the ability to clearly identify gaps in existing research and to place one's own contribution in the context of existing research; • to evaluate the own contribution of the dissertation to science and practice as well as its implications for society; • to master the application of scientific methods to solve a research problem; • to acquire the advanced analytical skills necessary for research activity; • to apply a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach combining expertise in economics and other social sciences.
Main learning outcomes
Completion of a PhD should develop transferable competencies and skills in doctoral students that are applicable in a variety of contexts and positions. On completion of the programme, graduates should have (i) Knowledge: ● Understand a variety of concepts related to the field of study of economics and management, with particular emphasis on the spatial and regional economics programme of study; ● be able to critically evaluate and compare key concepts related to the dissertation topic set within the broader thematic framework of the functioning of national, local and regional economies and spatial relationships and contexts; ● critically approach the analysis and synthesis of new and complex economic, social, environmental phenomena in their spatial contexts, not limiting themselves exclusively to the dissertation topic; ● on the basis of acquiring knowledge in the field, be able to formulate scientific hypotheses of problem solving, find and come up with their own solutions to research problems; (ii) Skills ● acquire the ability to independently acquire and process theoretical and practical knowledge; acquire methods of scientific research in accordance with the current state of knowledge in economics; ● define a new perspective on a problem based on the use of optimal methods and means; become familiar with new approaches used in solving practical problems; ● present and communicate research results to a professional audience, as well as to the general public; (iii) Competencies ● conduct research in accordance with the ethics of scientific work and scientific integrity; ● acquire habits for independent creative scientific research activity; Under the guidance of a supervisor, acquire the ability to produce a scientific output worthy of publication in a peer-reviewed journal of international standing; ● develop the ability to independently produce a scientific output worthy of publication in a peer-reviewed periodical of national importance; ● master the methods of scientific work in accordance with the latest approaches; ● creatively apply the acquired knowledge in practice; act as professionals in their field, regardless of their sector of activity, and contribute to technical, social and cultural progress in a knowledge-based society. ● to learn perseverance and to build commitment and enthusiasm for research and educational work, a deep interest in the research topic; ● to learn independent critical thinking and a systematic approach to work; ● acquire the ability to express ideas clearly to different audiences in a logical context; ● have the ability to work independently but also as part of a team, including international teams; ● learn the principles of project management (by looking at the dissertation and own research from a project management perspective); ● deliver the material appropriately to students as well as being able to guide students in writing their undergraduate theses.
