DescriptionThe graduate has the prerequisites to assess and solve complex theoretical and practical problems in the fields of finance (private and public finance, commercial and central banking, insurance, investing, etc.) and is able to creatively apply new knowledge in pedagogical, economic and social practice. He is expertly prepared to design, manage and participate in the solution of demanding analytical tasks and research projects. He can publish research results in scientific and professional publications and participate in the training of new experts. A strong emphasis is placed on mastering the methods and techniques of economic, financial, banking and investment analysis and more complex research, statistical and econometric methods. The graduate is ready to know and use appropriate methods and analytical tools after starting a job. The study program is based on an individual approach to the doctoral student and on the principle of independence of the doctoral student. The doctoral student himself chooses the composition of optional subjects, as well as the progress of the work on the dissertation (in accordance with the regulations of the university). Doctoral students are encouraged to discuss their own research with all faculty members in order to gain the broadest possible view of the issue.
Learning objectives
The goal of the doctoral study program Finance in the field of study Economics and Management is to prepare highly qualified experts for research in all areas of finance, i.e. banking, public finance, insurance as well as investment. Graduates will find employment mainly in research institutions and universities. However, they are also able to be applied in specialized analytical departments of financial institutions, such as banks, insurance companies or investment companies. Graduates of the study program can apply for all positions that require mastery of advanced analytical methods and work with analytical software packages. The educational program is designed with the goal of: • to become familiar with the existing research related to the dissertation topic - both theoretical and empirical literature; • to acquire the ability to clearly identify gaps in existing research and to place one's own contribution in the context of existing research; • to evaluate the own contribution of the dissertation to science and practice as well as its implications for society; • to master the application of scientific methods to solve a research problem; • to acquire the advanced analytical skills necessary for research activity; • to apply a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach combining expertise in economics and other social sciences.
Main learning outcomes
Graduate of the study program Finance III. degree has advanced theoretical knowledge in the field of Macro- and Microeconomics, but his greatest expertise lies in the field of the theoretical subject Money and Finance. In self-study, he can study new theoretical approaches. In addition, he masters advanced methods and techniques in the field of corporate finance. He is able to address and accept criticism of scientific results. He can independently formulate scientific questions and hypotheses, which he can subsequently verify. He can present the results of his research orally or in writing in English and present the results in front of the academic community and also publish them in prestigious scientific journals. The graduate also has experience with the pedagogical process and the training of new professionals. He presents the results of the research in accordance with scientific and copyright ethics. A graduate of this field of study has the prerequisites to support technical and social progress in academic and professional life in accordance with his personal integrity. The study program supports the individual development of the student, his ability to independently learn to present and defend the results of his work. The doctoral student independently (after consultation with the supervisor) chooses the composition of optional subjects, as well as the progress of the work on the dissertation (in accordance with the university's regulations). The educational program is designed with the learning objective: - get an overview of the state of knowledge in the area defined by the topic of the dissertation; - acquire the ability to identify and formulate dissertation topics and research problems; - master the application of scientific methods to solve a research problem; - acquire advanced analytical skills necessary for research activity; - apply a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach combining expertise in economics, finance, but also scientific fields, such as informatics, statistics and big data processing. After completing the study program, graduates should: - demonstrate a systematic understanding of the study field of Finance and master the skills and methods of scientific research in this field - demonstrate the ability to conceive, construct, implement and edit a substantial part of research with scientific integrity - to contribute original research to the expansion of the boundaries of scientific knowledge - be able to critically analyze, evaluate and synthesize new concepts After completing the study program, graduates acquire: (i) knowledge - students learn the theoretical basis of advanced economic theory with the active use of the corresponding mathematical apparatus. - students learn the basics of methodology and philosophy of science, mastering the principles of authorship and scientific ethics, IT-technical aspects of supporting scientific work and the basics of writing scientific texts. - students acquire the latest professional knowledge in the field of finance, banking and investing, acquire knowledge of advanced methods and analysis that can be applied in the investigation of financial and non-financial corporations. - students learn the theoretical foundations of econometric models, can understand specific mathematical notations and transform the theoretical and empirical foundations of general economic models into mathematical notations. (ii) skills - students will improve their skills related to the use of quantitative and qualitative economic models. They will improve the already mastered basics of academic discussion and polemics in the analysis of economic phenomena and economic-political decisions. They will improve their ability to critically revise the postulates of economic concepts, approaches and theories. - collaborative learning prevails in work methods. The discussion is based on a critical approach. The student has mastered the basic technical means necessary for scientific work. The result is the strengthening of the student's creativity, presentation skills, argumentation and also collaborative work. - students deepen the skill of working with data and financial statements, the skill of applying theoretical knowledge when processing tasks based on real data. - students will improve their skills related to the use of econometric methods in solving specific research problems. (iii) competencies - students will deepen their ability to think critically, think analytically and synthetically, and argue pragmatically. 1. Statement of DTSE The TUKE Faculty of Economics has been a long-standing partner for our company, and its graduates have significant representation among our employees. Our company has long-term continuous cooperation with the Faculty of Economics in various areas, such as professional lectures, trainings, competitions in the form of case studies, work placements for students, or the preparation of opposition reviews for bachelor's and diploma theses by DTSE SK employees. Graduates from EkF TUKE come with sufficient professional knowledge, we mainly evaluate positively the following areas: - Knowledge of mathematics, statistics, accounting, controlling, auditing - Economic knowledge (macro / micro – economics) - Knowledge of statistical modeling / working with data - "R" programming language - User knowledge / experience – Excel, SAP Before applying graduates to positions in DTSE SK, we see room for improvement in the areas listed below (areas where DTSE SK works with graduates the most in their professional development): - Capturing trends in the financial sphere and basic contact with BI technologies and tools - Development of own initiative and responsibility for assigned tasks (even beyond the scope of the assignment) - Ability to evaluate alternatives and propose solutions - Ability to defend the result and present oneself - Second foreign language (German) Our goal is to continue working closely with EkF and enable students to meet new technologies and practical use of knowledge at school or in our company. Statement of US Steel STRENGTHS and WEAKNESSES OF TUKE FACULTY OF ECONOMICS STUDENTS For EkF TUKE students, based on our experience from selection interviews, their participation in the Year-long internship and Summer internship programs, we have summarized the strengths and weaknesses that they generally possess. STRENGTHS : - Working with numbers - Excellent financial and business knowledge and skills - Professional and discreet demeanor - Very good level of communication in English - Professional preparation and professional communication and argumentation - Individual communication in both written and verbal form - Text analysis, work with text - Focusing on the essence of the problem, understanding and solving it - Internal motivation and commitment - Attention to detail - Independent work WEAKNESSES : - Real application of outputs and ideas in practice - A comprehensive view of the realization of ideas - Preparation for the interview – information and knowledge about the company in which they are applying for an internship USSKE provides university students with programs - Summer Internship - during the summer months of July and August, and during the school year the Year-long student internship program. A total of 51 EkF TUKE students took part in the year-long internship between 2017 and 2021. 25 students of EkF TUKE completed the summer internship in the last 5 years. They thus gained several years of work experience in our departments and workplaces, where they could use their theoretical knowledge in practice and gain practical experience in their field of study. Work performance, interest and work commitment, ability to integrate into a team, respect work regulations, fulfill tasks, cooperate - these were the areas that were evaluated and assessed when selecting students for permanent employment at USSK.
